The Royal Bahamas Defence Force received a boost to its Rangers Youth program with the presentation of musical instruments from the government of the People’s Republic of China to the government of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas on October 25.
Bringing remarks during a brief ceremony at the Her Majesty’s Bahamian Ship Coral Harbour were the Honorable Marvin Dames, Minister of National Security, and Huang Qingu, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to The Bahamas.
In his remarks, the Honourable Marvin Dames noted that the relationship between the countries has grown through educational and cultural exchanges as well as economic investments.
The Minister also lauded the efforts of the Chinese Embassy and stated that the presentation of wind and percussion instruments, and band accessories valued at $60,000 marked a significant contribution to the Ranger’s Program and further strengthens the ties between our two nations.
The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Huang Qingu, said that the handover was a symbol of friendship between the two nations, and hopes that the additional instruments will assist band members in taking their performances to another level. The Ambassador also reassured Minister Dames of his nation’s commitment to the modernization of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.
Items handed over during the ceremony included trombone, horns, sousaphones, saxophones, clarinets, drums, guitars and cymbals. Accessories also consisted of drum stands, a studio synthesizer and a computer. These items complement the musical instruments currently used by the Rangers, much of which were purchased by the Rangers.
Established in 2013 under the leadership of Chief Petty Officer Ezrum Lewis, the band is currently comprised of almost 50 members and have made significant achievements both nationally and internationally.
Also in attendance at the ceremony were Commodore Tellis Bethel, Commander Defence Force, members of his executive command, and the Rangers Director, Lieutenant Delvonne Duncombe, and his support team.
