The Royal Bahamas Defence Force’s Training Department, under the direction of Lieutenant Commander Byron Brown, successfully conducted a Leading Seaman Course from October 7 to October 18, 2024, with 49 participants completing the rigorous training. A certificate presentation ceremony was held onboard HMBS Coral to recognize the accomplishments of the newly certified Leading Seamen, where Captain Coral Harbour, Captain Glenn McPhee delivered keynote remarks.
During his address, Captain McPhee reminded the course participants that they are now positioned as key leaders among the junior ranks within the organization. He emphasized the vital role of Leading Seamen in upholding naval standards, maintaining discipline, and demonstrating strong leadership, as they are potential senior enlisted. He urged the graduates to continue exemplifying naval bearings and high standards, as their responsibilities are critical to the operational success of the Defence Force.
The course focused on essential areas such as leadership skills, command authority, military acts and regulations, and combating human trafficking. Participants were also tested in physically demanding activities, including a 9-mile run, swamp and river crossing exercises, all while carrying weapons and full gear. To conclude the training, the marines attended a church service at Living Waters Kingdom Ministries, led by the Force Chaplain, Apostle Dr. Raymond Wells.
The Leading Seaman Course plays a crucial role in the Defence Force’s mission by ensuring that its potential senior enlisted are equipped to supervise and mentor junior enlisted. These Leading Rates are responsible for executing tasks to the highest standards, guiding less experienced personnel, and maintaining discipline and professionalism across the rates. Their leadership and technical expertise are integral to the Defence Force’s effectiveness in achieving its mandate and ensuring the smooth operation of its units.
The RBDF under the leadership of Commander Defence Force, Commodore Raymond E. King, is dedicated to the transformation of Defence Force personnel’s quality and capabilities. This commitment is rooted in the pursuit of excellence in leadership, which is demonstrated through professionalism. We strive to cultivate a High-Performance Workforce focused on Performance Excellence, fostering an inclusive working environment that empowers our personnel. Through meaningful involvement of service members, we share the responsibility for accomplishing the Defence Force’s Mandate.
