Defence Headquarters, 19 AUG. ‘24 (RBDF): In a continued effort to equip young Bahamians with essential skills for disaster preparedness and community service, members of The Bahamas National Youth Guard (NYG) Training Program participated in a series of impactful events over the past weekend.
Led by Chief Petty Officer Kelsey Missick, these events highlighted the program’s objective to foster a sense of duty, discipline, and civic responsibility among its participants, who range in age from 18 to 24.
The weekend commenced on Friday, August 16, 2024, with Practical Firefighting Training held at the Royal Bahamas Police Force Headquarters (RBPF HQ). The new cohort, consisting of 63 individuals—29 males and 34 females—was welcomed to the RBPF HQ, where they underwent rigorous drills under the guidance of professional firemen.
These exercises, which included handling fire hoses, operating extinguishers, and performing victim rescues, were designed to reinforce the critical firefighting skills the trainees have been developing over the past six weeks. The trainees’ dedication and proficiency during these drills were a testament to the comprehensive training they have received, ensuring they are well-prepared to respond effectively in emergency situations.
On Saturday, August 17, 2024, the NYG team continued their weekend of service with a visit to The Bahamas Red Cross on JFK. Here, the trainees contributed to the organization’s agricultural initiatives, which support the Red Cross’s mission to provide meals for those in need. The trainees engaged in activities such as cleaning, fertilizing, and planting vegetables—an essential component of the Red Cross’s disaster response strategy. By participating in this community service, the NYG members not only supported a vital humanitarian effort but also deepened their understanding of the importance of sustainable practices in times of crisis.
The weekend concluded with a focus on spiritual renewal and reflection on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at Ebenezer Mission Baptist Evangelistic Church, located on Charles Vincent Street. This service marked the first time the trainees worshipped outside Her Majesty’s Coral Harbour Base, providing them with an opportunity to connect with the broader community. The experience was both spiritually enriching and unifying, as the trainees prepared for the next phase of their journey, which includes vocational training in carpentry, electrical work, and plumbing at The Bahamas Vocational Institute.
Under the leadership of Commodore Raymond King, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) remains steadfast in its mission to prepare young Bahamians for the challenges posed by natural disasters. Through a curriculum that includes disaster preparedness, meteorology, firefighting, first aid, and leadership, the NYG Program cultivates skilled, responsible, and community-oriented individuals who are ready to serve their nation in times of need.
The RBDF, committed to its role in safeguarding the nation’s heritage, continues to prioritize youth development and community engagement as key pillars of its strategic vision.
