Coral Harbour Base, 26 NOV. ‘18 (RBDF): Forty-five members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) and the Bahamas Customs Department are better equipped to render medical assistance to those in need after recently completing the American Heart Association First Aid and CPR Training at the Coral Harbour Base.

The course was conducted by the Defence Force’s Medical Center Instructors in keeping with the Commander Defence Force’s intent to improve the welfare of RBDF personnel, as well as those in their care. It was also designed to help participants preserve life until the patient receives higher medical attention.

Modules included Medical Emergency, Injury Emergency and Environmental Emergency with topics such as External Bleeding and Treatment of various types of Wounds, Bites and Stings, Treating Poisons, and Treating Strokes, Heart Attack, Choking and Seizures.

Participants were from various departments within the RBDF including the sea-going Squadron department. They are now certified to provide first aid treatment to their shipmates and others in need. Four members of The Bahamas Customs Department also participated in the course.

Petty Officer Mackey, a supervisor at the RBDF Medical Center and course instructor, said that the intent of the training was “to ensure that all members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force be certified with this knowledge in the field.”

Woman Marine Montoya Deal said the course was “beneficial because I have never did a CPR course before”, said Deal. “I have a sibling who is battling sickle cell, and I now know what to do if an emergency situation occurs ”, said Deal. “If I am around and something happens, I will not go in panic mode, but deal with the situation immediately”.

On completion of the course, each participant was issued a certification card, which has to be renewed within 2 years

The RBDF Medical Center is headed by Dr. Francis Saunders, the Force Medical Officer.
