The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) joined family, friends, former shipmates, and members of the community in paying final respects to Able Seaman Trevor Harold Michael Sands, a survivor of the HMBS Flamingo incident, during a semi-military funeral at Jubilee Cathedral in Freeport, Grand Bahama, on Saturday 27 June, 2026.
Mr. Sands, who passed away on May 31, 2026, at the age of 69, was remembered as a dedicated Seaman, a proud Bahamian, and a man whose life exemplified resilience, service, and patriotism.
The service was officiated by Apostle Brian Dareus, Pastor David Dareus, Elder Edward Culmer, and Deacon King McPhee and featured hymns, scripture readings, musical selections, and tributes celebrating the life and legacy of Able Seaman Trevor Harold Michael Sands. A heartfelt tribute was also delivered by Retired Force Chief Petty Officer Peterson James, a fellow survivor of the HMBS Flamingo. He reflected on their shared experiences and the enduring spirit of Mr. Sands.
In attendance was the Leader of the Official Opposition, the Hon. Michael Pintard, MP, also Deputy Commander Defence Force Captain Carlon Bethell, who delivered remarks on behalf of Commander Defence Force, Commodore Floyd P. Moxey.
Captain Bethell paid tribute to Mr. Sands’ unwavering commitment to service and highlighted the significance of preserving the legacy of the men of HMBS Flamingo, whose courage and sacrifice remain an important chapter in the history of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
The May 10, 1980, HMBS Flamingo incident is a symbol of sacrifice and national pride as HMBS Flamingo was attacked and sunk by Cuban fighter jets while carrying out her lawful duties in Bahamian waters. Mr. Sands’ life and service stand as a testament to the courage and resilience of the men who served on board HMBS Flamingo.
Following the service, Mr. Sands was laid to rest at Grand Bahama Memorial Park, where family, friends, and the Defence Force rendered a final farewell with military honours.
Under the leadership of Commander Defence Force, Commodore Floyd Moxey, the RBDF is optimizing excellence by bridging generations and embracing modernization. As such, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Able Seaman Trevor Sands and honour his service, sacrifice, and enduring contribution to the nation.
