In a ceremony filled with emotion and tradition, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force marked a pivotal moment in its history with the official Change of Command from Commander Defence Force, Commodore Raymond King to Commodore Floyd Moxey on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
This occasion symbolized the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another. As Commodore King relinquished command after five years of dedicated leadership, the Force gathered in unified respect and gratitude for what lies ahead under its new commander.
The event commemorated Commodore Moxey’s remarkable journey in the Defence Force, which began in January 1982 when he enlisted as a Marine Recruit. From those early days, he steadily ascended through a range of technical, operational, and managerial roles, each chapter of his career reinforcing his commitment to duty and country. His appointment as Commander Defence Force represents the culmination of more than four decades of service and a lifetime dedicated to excellence.
On May 8th, Commodore Moxey was formally promoted and became the ninth person in Defence Force history to attain the rank of Commodore. The transition was officially recognized as Her Excellency, The Most Honourable Dame Cynthia A. Pratt, Governor General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, presented him with the Instrument of Appointment, affirming his new role as the nation’s highest-ranking military officer.
As Commodore King took to the podium for his final address as Commander Defence Force, he reflected on his tenure with a mix of pride and gratitude. He thanked the Government and people of The Bahamas for entrusting him with the sacred responsibility of national defence and acknowledged the dedication of the officers and marines who stood with him throughout his command.
“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to lead this Force,” Commodore King said. “I leave with a full heart, knowing that the men and women of the Defence Force remain committed, capable, and courageous under new leadership.”
Prime Minister, the Honourable Philip E. Davis also paid tribute to outgoing Commodore King, highlighting his steady leadership, integrity, and calm resolve in the face of organizational and national challenges, which included Hurricane Dorian and COVID-19. The Prime Minister also extended full confidence in Commodore Moxey’s leadership, noting his capacity to lead with both authority and humility.
“Commodore Moxey is no stranger to the values of the Defence Force,” Prime Minister Davis remarked. “He embodies strength tempered with compassion, vision shaped by experience, and the deep understanding that leadership is about service.”
Following this, in his remarks, Commodore Moxey expressed sincere appreciation to the Government for the opportunity to serve at the helm of the Force, and extended heartfelt thanks to the mentors, colleagues, and family members who helped shape his path.
“I am humbled and honoured to assume this command,” said Commodore Moxey. “I pledge to lead with integrity, to build upon the strong foundation laid by those before me… with the support of the Government of The Bahamas and the Ministry of National Security, we will optimize excellence by bridging generations and embracing modernization.”
The ceremony closed with the echoes of final salutes and a shared moment of reflection, which served as a solemn farewell to a respected leader, and a hopeful welcome to a new commander ready to carry the mission forward.
