In a memorable ceremony at the HMBS Coral Harbour Training Auditorium, Arawak Homes honored Commander Cheryl Bethel (Retired) for her decades of dedicated service to the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) and the nation, by naming their latest subdivision/community in her honor.
Captain Coral Harbour, Glenn McPhee, opened the event with remarks on Commander Bethel’s impressive career and groundbreaking achievements. He identified her as a trailblazer within the RBDF, noting her as one of the first female officers in the organization and a pioneering leader who left a lasting mark on the force.
Enlisted on October 28, 1986, Commander Bethel served with distinction for 37 years, ultimately becoming the RBDF’s first female Training Officers and the first woman to reach the rank of Commander. Known for her mentorship and commitment to education, she provided tutorials in Mathematics and English to marines, helping them prepare for the Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) exams, positively affecting over 500 individuals under pupillage. Captain McPhee noted that Commander Bethel’s legacy is one of excellence, resilience, and dedication to service.
Franon Wilson, President of Arawak Homes, also addressed the audience, sharing his pride in honouring a Bahamian of Commander Bethel’s caliber. He mentioned her role as a role model, both within the RBDF and throughout the Bahamian community. Wilson shared that naming a community after Commander Bethel places her among other celebrated Bahamian pioneers, including former Police Commissioner Gerald Bartlett, former Prime Minister Sir Lynden Oscar Pindling, and Olympic athlete Frank Rutherford. He expressed confidence that Commander Bethel’s legacy will inspire generations to come and serve as a reminder of her significant contributions to The Bahamas.
The event, attended by leaders and esteemed guests, stands as a testament to Commander Cheryl Bethel’s profound impact on the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and her pivotal role in advancing opportunities for women in military service. Through this dedication, Arawak Homes celebrates her legacy and reaffirms the importance of honoring those who serve with commitment and integrity.
The RBDF remains committed to upholding the highest standards as we protect and preserve the rich legacy that defines our nation.
