The Bahamas National Unmanned Systems (BAHNUS) recently celebrated a significant achievement with the graduation of its 5th cohort aboard HMBS Coral Harbor.

This milestone was notable not only because of the 17 officers and marines from key local agencies—such as the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF), Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF), Department of Immigration, Bahamas Customs, and the Department of Corrections—but also because it marked the first time a cohort completed the program entirely under the guidance and leadership of the RBDF.

The training, which encompasses a wide range of unmanned systems including both underwater and aerial drones, was led by Director BAHNUS Academy, Captain Carlon Bethel. He highlighted the strategic role these technologies play in enhancing national security efforts, particularly in combating human smuggling, drug trafficking, and bolstering border security.

The program not only improves the technical capabilities of Bahamian forces but also contributes to regional security efforts by fostering stronger partnerships with neighboring countries. These alliances are pivotal for joint operations, information sharing, and coordinated responses to emerging maritime threats and transnational crime, which is crucial for a safer and more secure Caribbean.

Minister of National Security Wayne Munroe, who attended the ceremony, praised the high standards of the program, which he compared to international best practices. He also recognized the contributions of the five female graduates, applauding them as trailblazers in the field of unmanned systems and security technology. His comments underscored the continued importance of the RBDF in leading such initiatives and positioning the Bahamas as a regional leader in maritime safety and security.

This milestone reflects the RBDF’s growing expertise and capacity to employ cutting-edge technology in the service of national and regional security, ensuring the Bahamas remains equipped to meet modern security challenges.

Commodore Raymond E. King is steadfast in his commitment to fostering enhanced collaboration between the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) and local law enforcement agencies, as well as regional partners. Through joint operations and proactive information sharing, these strategic alliances serve as force multipliers, effectively addressing both existing and potential challenges.
