COMMANDER DEFENCE FORCE TOURS SOUTH ANDROS MULTI-PURPOSE GYMNASIUM

Commander Defence Force, Commodore Floyd Moxey recently toured the newly developed South Andros Multi-Purpose Gymnasium — a state-of-the-art facility poised to become a hub for athletic excellence and community engagement.

Designed to accommodate basketball teams from around the world, the gymnasium also boasts multi-functional capabilities. In addition to its spacious court, the facility features a modern weight room and is engineered to serve as a designated hurricane shelter during emergencies. Critical infrastructure includes a generator capable of supplying electricity for up to three weeks, a 100,000-gallon water tank, and multiple administrative offices, ensuring operational continuity and comfort in times of need.

The guided tour was led by Island Administrator Mr. Leonard Dames Jr., South Andros High School Principal Mrs. Carolyn Stuart, Gymnasium Administrator and retired Vice Principal Mrs. Angela Rolle, and Head Coach of South Andros High School Basketball Program Mr. Aaron Rolle.

During the visit, Commodore Moxey and his team explored the possibility of utilizing areas within the facility to support the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) Ranger Programme, a vision that aligns with national development and youth empowerment goals of the RBDF.

The South Andros Multi-Purpose Gymnasium began its journey in 2016 under the leadership of then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works, the Honourable Philip E. Davis. While the facility has already seen a soft opening, plans are actively underway for its official naming and grand opening ceremony in the near future.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force remains committed to forging strategic partnerships that uplift communities, inspire youth, and strengthen the nation’s resilience.
