The Deputy Commander of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF), Captain Shondell Pinder, joined other distinguished guests at the Annual Church Service marking the start of Disability Awareness Week on Monday, December 2, 2024. The event, held at First Baptist Church, was celebrated under the theme “Moving Towards an Inclusive Bahamas.”

The ceremony brought together prominent dignitaries and community leaders, including First Lady Ann Marie Davis, spouse of Prime Minister Philip Davis; Ambassador Yan Jiarong of the People’s Republic of China to The Bahamas; and The Honorable Myles Laroda, Minister of Social Services, as well as other government officials and influential figures committed to advancing inclusion and equality.

Highlights during the service included Ambassador Yan Jiarong announcement of the opening of applications for the 2025–2026 Chinese Scholarships Program, underscoring her nation’s commitment to supporting educational opportunities for Bahamian citizens. Minister Myles Laroda also stated the importance of expanding services and resources to empower individuals with disabilities, calling for greater support across all sectors of society. Bishop Delton Fernander, President of the Bahamas Christian Council, delivered a powerful sermon.

He highlighted the remarkable achievements of Helen Keller and Stephen Hawking, reminding attendees of the resilience and potential within everyone, regardless of physical or mental challenges.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force, under the leadership of Commodore Raymond King, remains unwavering in its commitment to fostering equality and inclusion. The RBDF actively supports national efforts that enhance the well-being and development of all members of Bahamian society.
