The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) Mariners saw their season come to an end in their playoff game against the Cabinet Aces on Friday past in the The Bahamas Government Departmental Basketball Association league. In the first round best of 3 games series, the youthful Mariners lost 2 straight games with the final score 76-71. They completed the season in 4th place with a 10-3 record behind the pennant winning Gladstone Road Panthers. “It was a pretty good season from a competition point of view,” said Petty Officer Dwayne McGregor, Mariners head coach. “The guys were committed to winning, but with operational obligations to the job, and not having a full team complement to attend practices and games became a challenge.” The team has been in the league since 2006, with Petty Officer McGregor as its coach since 2009. With the hopes of being more successful next year, he intends to commence practice in January 2019 for the upcoming season which starts in June 2019. The Commander Defence Force, along with the Officers and Marines of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force commended Coach McGregor and the Mariners team on a great effort this year. He also praised the efforts of the RBDF Patrollers, another Defence Force team in the league, which did not make the playoffs. As the Royal Bahamas Defence Force continues to protect the territorial integrity of The Bahamas, the men and women of the force also strive to keep physically fit by participating in sporting activities.
