The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) announces the successful completion of a high-level strategic visit to Abaco by Executive Leadership, marking a significant step in plans to strengthen national security infrastructure in the Northern Bahamas. From 5-8 February 2026, Deputy Commander Defence Force, Captain Carlon Bethell, accompanied by Commander Origin Deleveaux, Commanding Officer of NORTHERN COMMAND, conducted an extensive site assessment tour of HMBS ABACO and surrounding areas.

The visit focused on critical projects designed to expand the Force’s operational reach and effectiveness. Key areas of review included:

(a)A site assessment for the installation of a long-range radar tower, a project aimed at significantly enhancing maritime domain awareness and surveillance capabilities.

(b)An evaluation of the proposed location for a new, dedicated RBDF Maritime Unit facility. This facility is intended to accommodate larger RBDF vessels and provide integrated living, recreational, and operational spaces.

(c)A review of the Spring City compound for potential renovations to serve as the official residence for the Commanding Officer of NORTHERN COMMAND, solidifying the command’s permanent leadership presence on the island.

“The advancement of our infrastructure in Abaco is pivotal to the strategic posture of the NORTHERN COMMAND,” stated Commander Origin Deleveaux. “These assessments are not merely about buildings or towers; they are about operational readiness, force protection, and our enduring commitment to safeguarding the people and waters of the Northern Bahamas.” The itinerary included inspections of current berthing areas, courtesy calls to Royal Bahamas Police Force counterparts, and reviews of new administrative office space secured for the RBDF at the Government Complex in Marsh Harbour.

Deputy Commander Bethell emphasized on behalf of Commander Defence Force Commodore Floyd Moxey the broader strategic vision, noting, “This visit was instrumental in determining the concrete way forward for HMBS ABACO. The planned developments, including the progression towards establishing a naval base at the port facility, are central to the RBDF’s modernization agenda. They will ensure we are optimally positioned to execute our mandate of defending our territorial integrity and supporting national development.”

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force under Commodore Moxey’s leadership, is optimizing excellence by bridging generations and embracing modernization. As such, we reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the territorial integrity of The Bahamas with NORTHERN COMMAND playing a pivotal role.
