“GET TO KNOW YOUR CAPTAIN” INITIATIVE

PROMOTES MENTORSHIP AND BOOSTS MORALE.The Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Officers’ Wardroom, recently spearheaded the “Get To Know Your Captain” initiative during the month of May. The initiative aimed to foster greater connection and mentorship between executive command and enlisted members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF).

As part of the programme, several Captains of the Defence Force volunteered their time to participate in morale-building lunches with selected junior officers, senior enlisted personnel, junior rates, and reservists. A total of twenty-two (22) individuals were randomly selected from across various departments to participate.

The initiative created a rare opportunity for members of lower ranks and rates to engage senior officers in a more relaxed, candid environment. These sessions encouraged open dialogue, allowing marines to connect with their captains beyond the formality of rank and protocol.

It was met with positive feedback from members of the Executive Command who participated.

Captain Gregory Brown, who shared lunch with marines on three separate occasions, described the sessions as open, respectful, and a valuable reminder of the importance of teamwork amid shared career challenges.

Captain Shawn Adderley also praised the initiative, acknowledging its potential to have a broader reach, but expressing gratitude for the opportunity to connect with junior members in a meaningful way.

Captain Glenn McPhee noted the value of relaxed environments that encourage stronger connections between the executive team and marines.

Commander Origin Deleveaux described the engagement as an important opportunity for RBDF personnel to interact directly with their senior leadership.

Participants also expressed appreciation noting that it promotes open dialogue on tradition, policy, morale, and welfare.

Chief Petty Officer Ricardo Brown said being selected from so many peers, brought a sense of privilege and pride, while Leading Seaman Kevin Hall welcomed the chance to voice concerns and felt their input was genuinely heard.

The “Get To KnowYour Captain” initiative received overwhelmingly positive feedback and recommendations from both command and participants alike, underscoring the value of such engagements in promoting transparency, mentorship, and unity within the ranks.

The Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department remains committed to providing ongoing support to all ranks and rates of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.
