A total of three hundred and ninety four (394) Haitian migrants were apprehended due to the combined efforts of The Cuban Border Patrol, Operations Bahamas Turks and Caicos (OPBAT), the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force on January 21, 2023.Acting on Intel from the Cuban Border Patrol, OPBAT, USCG and the RBDF monitored an HSV that was later intercepted 34 nm off Guinchos Cay by USCG Legare with an estimated two hundred (200) persons on board. Upon intercepting the HSV vessel 27nm off Anguilla Cay, the USCG Cutter disembarked 394 migrants with one (1) minor being found deceased. The migrants are currently being transported to another Coast Guard Cutter to await a rendezvous position with RBDF officials. This recent apprehension brings the total number of Haitian migrants intercepted in Bahamian waters for the year to just over five hundred (500) persons. The Royal Bahamas Defence Force remains committed to collaborating with local and international partner agencies in protecting the territorial integrity of The Bahamas and keeping our borders secured.
