Defence Headquarters, March 30, 2025 – A contingent of 26 Marines from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) arrived at Grand Bahama on March 29 to reinforce efforts in battling the relentless bushfires threatening communities across the island. The Marines were welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper, Minister for Grand Bahama Ginger Moxey, Leader of the Opposition Michael Pintard, other Members of Parliament from the Free National Movement, and RBDF Commodore, Dr. Raymond E. King.
The RBDF, mandated to assist in national disaster response, law enforcement support, and other duties as determined by the National Security Council, has deployed these additional personnel to strengthen the team already stationed at RBDF Northern Command as part of the Force’s decentralization strategy. Their presence will provide critical manpower in containing the fires and safeguarding lives and property.
All RBDF personnel undergo basic firefighting training as part of their initial entry program, and many possess advanced shipboard firefighting qualifications, making them well-equipped to support local firefighting teams in this emergency.
The Defence Force has a long history of responding to national emergencies, including fire-related disasters. RBDF Marines played a pivotal role in responding to two major Straw Market fires on September 24, 2001, and December 2011. Additionally, in 2011, they were instrumental in salvaging historical artifacts from the Pompey Museum following a fire. On February 14, 2011, RBDF Marines also assisted in extinguishing the Betty K Shipping Company building fire, which housed a structure built in 1920 and listed as a historical site.
With fires still raging, the focus remains on bringing the situation under control and protecting those affected. RBDF personnel will continue working alongside emergency response teams to combat the blazes and provide critical assistance where needed.
Commodore Raymond E. King remains steadfast in his commitment to strengthening collaboration between the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and local law enforcement agencies. Through joint operations and proactive information-sharing, these strategic alliances serve as force multipliers, enhancing national security and effectively addressing both existing and emerging challenges.
