RBDF ATTENDS ANNUAL HMBS FLAMINGO CHURCH SERVICE

Senior Officers and Enlisted personnel of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) attended the annual Mass at All Saints Anglican Church in observance of HMBS FLAMINGO and in honor of its fallen crew members on Sunday, 20 May 2025.

The sinking of HMBS FLAMINGO by Cuban MiG fighter jets on 10 May 1980 remains one of the most tragic and pivotal moments in the history of the RBDF. On that fateful day, four brave Marines made the ultimate sacrifice, losing their lives in the line of duty and leaving behind a lasting legacy of courage, dedication, and unwavering service to The Bahamas.

Honoring these heroes remains a solemn duty—not only to remember their sacrifice but also to ensure that future generations never forget the selfless acts of bravery that have shaped both the RBDF and the Nation.

Deputy Commander Defence, Captain Carlon Bethell, addressed the congregation, emphasizing the importance of commemorating this day and using it as a reminder of the profound sacrifices RBDF members have made—and continue to make—in the service of The Bahamas.

Father Sebastian Campbell also spoke during the service, highlighting the Church’s role in preserving the memory and legacy of the four fallen Marines. He reflected on the longstanding relationship between the Church and the RBDF, and acknowledged the Force’s contribution to the completion of the Church’s hall—now recognized as the largest of its kind in The Bahamas.

As the Mass concluded, those in attendance were reminded that the spirit of HMBS FLAMINGO lives on—not only in memorials and ceremonies, but in the ongoing commitment of every service member who dons the uniform with pride, purpose, and patriotism.
