Over the past four months, the Ceremonial Department of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF), under the leadership of Chief Petty Officer Ian Hall, spearheaded a transformative mentorship initiative at Thelma Gibson Primary School.
The program, developed in collaboration with Mrs. Tiffany Johnson, Mrs. Shenique Collie-Sweeting, Mrs. Marvette Collie, and Ms. Devaadra Hanna, focused on the growth of the school’s Young Gentlemen’s Club (YG Club). The initiative saw RBDF personnel engage students twice a week through structured sessions incorporating military drills, life skills, and character development – all designed to instill values such as discipline, integrity, and social responsibility.
Participants received guidance in areas such as personal hygiene, conflict resolution, and home responsibility, with marines offering mentorship, encouragement, and consistent support throughout the term. The Ceremonial Department further contributed by donating non-perishable food items and snacks to sustain the program’s impact.
The initiative culminated on 13 June 2025, when the Ceremonial Department was recognized as special guests during Thelma Gibson Primary School’s Graduation Ceremony. Twelve members of the Young Gentlemen’s Club graduated from the sixth grade, showcasing marked growth in confidence, discipline, and maturity.
Among the graduates was Abhay Ramlall, who earned the highest academic distinction in his class. In recognition of his achievement, Marine Seaman Tyler Leary presented him with a brand-new iPad, commending his discipline and dedication.
“This is just the beginning,” said Chief Petty Officer Ian Hall. “The Ceremonial Department remains committed to making a difference in the lives of our young men.”
This initiative reflects the Defence Force’s ongoing commitment to youth empowerment, national development, and the promotion of positive societal values.
