In a grand display of military tradition, precision, and national pride, under the patronage of Her Excellency, the Most Honourable Dame Cynthia Alexandria Pratt, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force conducted a Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Government House on Friday, 26 June 2026.
Perched on the historic, 10-acre estate of Mount Fitzwilliam, the venue is official residence and office of the Governor-General of The Bahamas. It is easily recognizable by its iconic conch-pink and white Georgian Colonial architecture. The estate was established in 1737 and rebuilt in the early 1930s. Its interior was redecorated in the 1940s when the Duke of Windsor (former King Edward VIII) served as Governor of The Bahamas from August 1940 to April 1945.
In keeping with tradition, the ceremony featured RBDF personnel carrying out the time-honoured guard exchange, a ceremonial act symbolizing the seamless transfer of duty and continued vigilance at the official residence of the Governor General. As part of the ceremony Her Excellency conducts an official inspection of the Guard.
The Changing of the Guard is a ceremony scheduled for the last Friday of every month. It provides residents and visitors with an opportunity to experience an important Bahamian military tradition, customs, standards, service, honour, and national identity.
