The RBDF Sea Training Department, has conducted Basic Safety STCW Training Programme for 12th grade cadets of The Bahamas Maritime Cadet Corps (BMCC) during the months of February and March 2026.
The Sea Training Department, provided cadets with the internationally recognized safety and emergency response training, equipping them with the critical competencies required for maritime operations and future seafaring careers.
The first phase of training was conducted from 17–22 February 2026 in Eleuthera, where Force Chief Petty Officer Kermit Turnquest, Force Chief Petty Officer Gavin Dean, and Leading Seaman Roderico Carroll instructed twenty-seven (27) cadets from the North, Central, and South settlements. Concurrently, Petty Officer Tyrone Brown, and Marine Reservist Kivarlo D. Smith, delivered training in Exuma to sixteen (16) cadets.
The second phase was conducted from 30 March–3 April 2026 in Freeport, Grand Bahama, where Force Chief Petty Officer Kermit Turnquest, assisted by Leading Seaman Roderico Carroll, trained an additional sixteen (16) cadets. Sub Lieutenant Preston Major Jr. served as Course Observer. Simultaneously, Force Chief Petty Officer Gavin Dean, assisted by Able Seaman Greg Russell, conducted training for twenty (20) cadets in North Andros. Marine Reservist Kivarlo D. Smith, supported by BMCC New Providence instructors, trained thirty-nine (39) cadets, marking the largest cohort of the programme.
The BMCC is a programme instituted under The Bahamas Maritime Authority to introduce and prepare high school students from grades 10 through 12 for career opportunities in the maritime industry and to build future national capacity. The programme is conducted in conjunction with the Ministry of National Security, via the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF), and the Ministry of Education.
