Officers and Marines participated in the National Youth Guard (NYG) Instructors’ Leadership Symposium held at Super Clubs Breezes Resort on Thursday, 4 June 2026. The symposium brought together instructors and guest speakers committed to enhancing youth development through effective leadership, mentorship, and professional growth.
The symposium was coordinated by Commander Allen Dixon, Executive Officer of the NYG Programme, who underscored the importance of continuous instructor development in advancing the programme’s mission.
Participants engaged in a series of discussions focused on organizational structure, mental health awareness, and leadership development. The sessions were designed to equip instructors with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively guide and inspire the Nation’s youth.
A featured leadership session was facilitated by Commander Delvonne Duncombe, who led a thought-provoking discussion on leadership principles and the critical role instructors play in shaping future leaders.
Mental health was also a central theme of the symposium. Psychiatric Nurses Tara Woodside-Coakley and Latisha Gray delivered an informative presentation highlighting the importance of mental well-being, emotional resilience, and recognizing signs of mental health challenges among youth. Their discussions provided principles and strategies to help instructors foster supportive and healthy environments for programme participants.
The symposium further encouraged collaboration and the exchange of ideas among instructors, reinforcing a shared commitment to excellence in youth mentorship and development.
The National Youth Guard (NYG) was officially launched on October 21, 2022, by the Office of the Prime Minister. It is an intensive training programme focused on equipping young
Bahamians with the tools needed to assist the nation with the help of private agencies during national emergencies, such as natural disasters. The Program’s Coordinator is Captain Sonia Miller.
