The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF), led by Executive Staff Officer, Captain Henry Daxon in collaboration with representatives from the Department of Civil Aviation, conducted assessments of San Salvador and Long Island following the passage of Hurricane Melissa on Friday, 31 October 2025.
The joint assessment team’s mission was to evaluate any possible damage to infrastructure, airports, and critical facilities on both islands to ensure the safety and readiness of essential services. This effort highlights the RBDF’s ongoing commitment to national security, disaster preparedness, and the protection of Bahamian communities in the aftermath of severe weather events.
Captain Daxon and his team worked alongside local administrators and emergency response personnel to gather firsthand information to provide on-scene situational reports to the Disaster Risk Management Authority (DRMA) in support of relief and recovery operations.
The assessment flights were facilitated by RBDF’s Airwing department. The Pilot-in-Command was Senior Lieutenant Delron Mitchell who was assisted by Able Seman Justin Johnson and Able Mechanic Steven Cooper.
The RBDF, under the leadership of Commodore Floyd Moxey, is optimizing excellence by bridging generations and embracing modernization. As such, we remain steadfast in our mandate to safeguard the integrity of The Bahamas by providing assistance and relief in times of national disasters.
