The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) continues its commitment to community development in Great Inagua, participating in several impactful initiatives aimed at youth education and engagement.

Initiative #1 On September 24, 2024, Leading Seaman Rodney Ashwood shared his culinary expertise with students at the Inagua All-Age School’s Home Economics Department. Ashwood guided the students through practical cooking exercises, contributing to the development of their culinary skills. Due to the success of this session, he was invited to return for additional classes later in the week. His focus shifted to preparing four students selected to represent the

school in the prestigious Junior Chef Competition, set to take place in New Providence in October. This partnership highlights RBDF’s role in nurturing young talent and promoting academic excellence.

Initiative #2 Furthering the Force’s educational impact, RBDF personnel, led by Chief Petty Officer W. Watson, held a specialized training session on September 26, 2024, with students from the Bahamas Maritime Cadet Corps at Inagua All-Age School. The session, titled “Introduction to Navigation, Bends, and Hitches,” introduced students to critical concepts in maritime navigation and line-handling techniques. The hands-on training provided by CPO Watson and his team, which included Petty Officer A. Bullard and Marine Seaman J. Miller, exposed students to essential maritime skills that could serve as a foundation for future careers in the maritime sector.

Initiative #3 In addition to educational efforts, the RBDF team was also involved in spiritual and community engagement activities. On Sunday, September 24, 2024, Acting Force Chief Petty Officer Davey Bethel addressed the youth congregation at the Church of God of Prophecy in Great Inagua during their Youth Service. Bethel’s speech emphasized the RBDF’s core responsibilities, including national security, disaster preparedness, and community support. His address resonated with the audience, many of whom expressed interest in future RBDF initiatives. In response, the RBDF announced plans to establish a Range Program in Great Inagua, offering youth development opportunities focused on discipline and skill-building.

These initiatives reflect Commander Defence Force, Commodore Raymond King’s Strategic objective of the organization building strong relationships within the communities it serves, promoting youth development, and fostering educational and vocational growth throughout the islands.
