The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) welcomed the sixth cohort of the National Youth Guard (NYG) on Saturday, 31 January 2026, as eighty-six (86) young Bahamians embarked on a transformative journey of service, discipline, and national development.

The Honourable Prime Minster, Philip Davis KC, MP was on hand to address the new cohort. He opined that each young person who stepped forward today made a deliberate choice to serve, to grow, and to be part of something bigger than themselves.

The new intake, comprising forty-two (42) males and forty-four (44) females, commenced their orientation at the Sir Orville A. Turnquest Building, Defence Headquarters on John F. Kennedy Drive. From there, recruits were transported to HMBS Coral Harbour where they were introduced to their accommodations and issued training kits and essential gear.

Captain Sonia Miller and the training team guides NYG Cadets through a structured and rigorous curriculum designed to build discipline, resilience, and leadership. The training programme will encompass a wide range of subjects: firefighting, discipline, teamwork, disaster relief operations, leadership development, and community emergency response training.

Cadets will also receive instruction in collaboration with the National Training Agency and are scheduled to complete Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) certification, skills courses at the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI), and various apprenticeship opportunities.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force, under Commodore Moxey’s leadership, is optimizing excellence by bridging generations and embracing modernization. As such we remain committed to empowering the youth of The Bahamas, fostering leadership, discipline, national pride, and preparing the next generation to contribute meaningfully to the protection and advancement of the Commonwealth.
