The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) successfully concluded a comprehensive two-week Military Justice Seminar, held from Monday, 16 June to Friday, 27 June 2025, aimed at enhancing the legal acumen and procedural competence of officers across the Force.
The seminar brought together legal professionals and military personnel to examine the historical foundations, constitutional relevance, and procedural framework of military justice. With the overarching goal of reinforcing fairness, discipline, and due process within the RBDF, the sessions delved into an array of essential topics related to military law and court procedure.
Key areas of instruction included:
• The purpose and history of military justice
• Duties and responsibilities of the Authorized Officer
• Laying and investigating charges
• Courtroom procedures, summary court process, and jurisdiction
• The duties of the Base First Lieutenant in disciplinary matters
• Fairness and rights of the accused, including evidence handling and mitigation
• Visit to the Magistrates Court, Chief Magistrate Magistrate Roberto Reckley
• Role of the Prosecutor, discussed by Ms. Darnel Dorsett
• Military justice under the Constitution
• A comprehensive overview of Court Martial proceedings, including:
o History, authority, and jurisdiction
o Classes and procedure of Court Martial
o Duties of Judge Advocates, Defence Counsel, and Police Prosecutors
o Submissions, sentencing, and reviews
o Mock Court Martial exercises simulating real-time military legal proceedings
A highlight of the seminar included a visit to the Supreme Court to observe case management proceedings by His Lordship Justice Bernard Fitzpatrick, which offered insight matters before the civilian courts.
The seminar concluded with a mock court martial, allowing participants to apply legal theory in a simulated environment, reinforcing courtroom roles, legal protocols, and adjudication processes.
