The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) hosted a delegation from the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) at Coral Harbour Base, underscoring The Bahamas’ pivotal role in countering transnational threats and supporting regional security. The delegation, which oversees the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti, participated in high-level discussions with RBDF leadership to refine maritime strategies aimed at limiting gang activity in Haiti and enhancing regional maritime security.
Led by Senior Assistant Inspector General Godfrey Otunge, the delegation included Deputy Director Jayne Toroitich, Director General Jerusa Ali from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Captain Clebert Dorlus and Commander Jean Pedro Mars of the Haitian Coast Guard, MSSM Legal Officer Lieutenant Colonel Brown Joel Oscar Brown, and Chief of Staff Ian Rowe. Together, they engaged with Commodore Raymond E. King, Commander of the Defence Force, and RBDF leadership to advance collaborative approaches to addressing the security situation in Haiti.
Central to the discussions were the maritime concept of operations necessary to severely limit the influence of gangs in Haiti. Emphasis was placed on increasing the effectiveness of naval and coast guard units in Haiti and the wider Caribbean, which are integral to preventing the flow of illicit goods and disrupting criminal activities. The RBDF’s maritime capabilities were highlighted, particularly its role in surveillance, interdiction operations, and providing strategic support to multinational forces in Haiti.
The mission’s overall strategy, operation, and tactics were reviewed with a focus on the deployment of multinational forces to secure key areas, reduce gang activities, and ensure the protection of critical maritime routes. This includes a robust combination of naval patrols, air surveillance, and close cooperation with international partners.
During the visit, officials also provided updates on the ongoing successes achieved by the mission forces. Notable accomplishments include the significant reduction in illicit trafficking, disruption of gang operations, and the protection of vital shipping lanes, all contributing to a safer environment for civilians and the regional community.
Commodore Raymond E. King emphasized The Bahamas’ steadfast commitment to regional stability, noting that under his leadership, the RBDF remains fully equipped and prepared to support international peacekeeping and security operations. The RBDF’s professionalism in addressing maritime threats, conducting disaster relief efforts, and assisting regional partners demonstrates the country’s unwavering dedication to its role in securing Caribbean waters.
The Royal Bahamas Defence Force continues to work closely with international partners to ensure the success of the Multinational Security Support Mission, reaffirming its commitment to both national and regional security and stability.
