The Base Civil Construction Management Unit (BCCMU) honored the remarkable careers of Commander Kenneth Forbes and Lieutenant Commander Gladstone Moss with a heartfelt retirement event on Friday, January 10, 2025.

The event brought together past and present members of the BCCMU to celebrate the outstanding contributions of these two distinguished officers. Their decades of dedicated service were reflected upon with gratitude and admiration.

Commander Kenneth Forbes’s career stands as a testament to excellence and perseverance. Joining the Defence Force 44 years ago as part of Entry 4, Forbes began his journey in the Training Department as an instructor. He became the first officer to attend Officer Candidate School in Virginia, blazing a trail for others to follow. Over his career, he served on every class of ship in the Royal Bahamas Defence Force fleet, with HMBS Fort Montague holding a special place in his heart as his favorite vessel, where he served as Commanding Officer.

A true visionary, Commander Forbes’s leadership of the Base Civil Construction Management Unit was a career highlight. His contributions to infrastructure and design were transformative. He played a key role in constructing barracks, expanding the Sick Bay Department, and designing and building furniture for the Ministry of National Security.

These lasting achievements have cemented his legacy within the Defence Force. Lieutenant Commander Gladstone Moss’s 38-year career was equally distinguished. Entering the Defence Force on June 23, 1986, as part of Entry 18, Moss began his service in the Squadron Department aboard HMBS Inagua. He worked diligently, rising through the ranks to become a Chief before transitioning to Officer. A cornerstone of his career was his instrumental role in constructing the dome for the monument honoring the fallen marines of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force a project of profound national significance.

Moss’s tenure as the Engineering Officer aboard HMBS Bahamas during its return voyage from the Netherlands following major upgrades stands out as a proud accomplishment. However, his favorite assignment was in the Aids to Navigation (ATON) Department, where he visited every major lighthouse in the Bahamas. His work there underscored the critical importance of maintaining navigational aids for maritime safety.

Captain Glenn McPhee, among other attendees, shared heartfelt tributes, recounting memorable stories and highlighting the indelible impact Forbes and Moss have had on their colleagues, the organization, and the nation.

On behalf of Commander Defence Force Raymond King, as well as the officers, warrant officers, senior and junior enlisted personnel, and civilian staff, we extend our deepest appreciation to Commander Kenneth Forbes and Lieutenant Commander Gladstone Moss for their exemplary service and steadfast commitment to the Royal Bahamas Defence Force. Their legacies will continue to inspire future generations, and their contributions will not be forgotten.
