Defence Headquarters, November 2, ‘23 (RBDF): Commodore Raymond E. King, the Commander of the Defence Force, and Commander William Sturrup, represented the Bahamas at the 3rd Coast Guard Global Summit in Tokyo, Japan, from October 30th to November 2nd. The summit brought together leaders from Coastal Authorities across approximately 100 countries, regions, and organizations. Its primary focus was centered around establishing a comprehensive framework for international collaboration in bolstering maritime security.

This significant event, hosted by the Japan Coast Guard in conjunction with the Nippon Foundation, underscored the pressing need for heightened cooperation among coast guard authorities amidst the escalating environmental challenges affecting our oceans on a global scale. Japan Coast Guard Commandant Shohei Ishii emphasized this in his opening address, stating, “In light of the expanding threats and damages to the oceans due to environmental shifts, the cooperation and dialogue among coast guard authorities must be reinforced more than ever.”

Throughout the summit, participants engaged in extensive discussions aimed at facilitating the exchange of information among coast guard organizations, cultivating global talent in the field, and harnessing state-of-the-art technologies, including unmanned ships.

Notably, heads of Coast Guards reaffirmed the critical importance of maritime safety, security, and the preservation of a pristine marine environment as fundamental cornerstones for the overall well-being and prosperity of the international community. Furthermore, there was a shared recognition of the urgent need for a comprehensive and collective response to the multifaceted challenges confronting our world today.
