When Commander William Sturrup and the crew members of HMBS BAHAMAS were called upon to transport supplies to Abaco, they didn’t count on assisting an individual who was injured in a traffic accident on Sunday past.
After delivering supplies via a vehicle to the Defence Force Officers and Marines stationed in Sandy Point shortly after 7:00 p.m., the crew members were enroute to their craft in Marsh Harbour when they came upon a vehicle that was badly damaged on the S.C. Bootle Highway.
They stopped, and after further investigation, the passenger who was walking around the vehicle was seen to have received minor injuries, but the driver was unconscious and unresponsive. Able Seaman Sturrup, a medical attendant aboard HMBS BAHAMAS immediately assisted a retired nurse on the island in assessing the area and cautiously removing the victim from the vehicle. He, along with the other crew members also ensured safety of the area.
The injured man was eventually air lifted to New Providence for further medical treatment but updates are not available at this time.
As the Royal Bahamas Defence Force continue to patrol and protect the territorial integrity of The Bahamas, the men and women also provide various types of assistance when called upon.
