British Royal Navy Officer Pays a Visit to Commander Defence Force (Acting)

Royal Navy Commanding Officer of Her Majesty’s Ship (HMS) Mersey, Lieutenant Commander Richard Hewitt, paid a courtesy call on Commander Defence Force (Acting) Captain Tellis Bethel at Royal Bahamas Defence Force Headquarters in Coral Harbour, New Providence on 6 June 2016.

During the Courtesy Call, both Lieutenant Commander Richard Hewitt and Captain Tellis Bethel had an opportunity to discuss matters of mutual interest and presented each other with plaques in commemoration of the visit.

Lieutenant Commander (Lt. Cdr.) Hewitt is graduate of Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) in Dartmouth, England, where many Royal Bahamas Defence Force officers (including Captain Bethel) completed their initial naval officer training. Lt. Cdr. Hewitt has held appointments aboard a Royal Navy Type 42 destroyer, a frigate, and an aircraft carrier. In 2015, he was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the River Class patrol ship Mersey.

While in Nassau, HMS Mersey carried out sea and ship-borne training exercises with members of the Defence Force. HMS Mersey is currently stationed in this region in an effort to prevent drug smuggling, and to provide humanitarian/disaster relief during the hurricane season (June to November 2016).
