Marines of the ill-fated HMBS FLAMINGO were remembered with a gun salute in military form and a wreath-laying ceremony during the 44th Anniversary Memorial Service on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Coral Harbour Base.
The Minister of National Security, the Honourable Wayne Munroe, K.C brought remarks and in memory of the vessel and crew, placed a wreath at the HMBS Flamingo Memorial Park Monument. Family members and friends of the four marines lost in action, along with survivors attended the solemn ceremony.
In the Minister’s remarks, he spoke on the fallen marines who gave their lives on that fateful day, along with the crew of HMBS flamingo who exemplified the highest ideals of service and sacrifice.
He expressed that their courage should serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for us all in the face of adversity.
In addition to the crew of HMBS Flamingo, during the ceremony, loved ones of fallen marines were also able to place wreaths at the Memorial Park for their lost family, friends and comrades for their sacrifice for the country. As we honor their memory, let us also uphold the principles for which they stand.
Some of the dignitaries in attendance included the Acting Prime Minster, The Honourable Glenys Hanna-Martin, who also serves as the Minister of Education, Technical and Vocational Training of The Bahamas; Minister of National Security, the Honourable Wayne Munroe K.C.; Commissioner of Police, Clayton Fernander; Commander Defence Force, Commodore Raymond King, His Executive team; RBDF Officers and Marines and representatives from other government agencies.
The ceremony concluded with a wreath being laid in waters just outside the harbour to commemorate those who were lost at sea. These men gave their lives in service to country. We salute them, and we cherish their memories as we remain committed to “Guarding Our Heritage”.
