Defence Headquarters, October 3, ‘23 (RBDF): A contingent of thirty-two (32) RBDF personnel, under the leadership of Petty Officer Richard Corneille, Team Coach and Team Captains Chief Petty Officers Ande Deveaux and Edison Rolle, participated in the Second Annual Bahamas Dragon Boat Festival 2023. This event not only served as an exciting platform to showcase our team’s spirit and prowess but also provided a valuable opportunity to present a positive image of the RBDF to the public and was organized by the Training Officer, Commander Valentino Rolle.
The RBDF Naval Destroyers and the RBDF Water Defenders were both tasked with participating in this two-day event, which commenced on September 30th, 2023, at Goodman’s Bay. Despite a tight two-week training schedule for the physically demanding sport of dragon boat racing, our teams competed admirably in both the 200-meter sprint race and the 500-meter endurance race, demonstrating exceptional balance, speed, and synchronicity. Despite the brief training period, our teams exhibited their military discipline and garnered impressive accolades:
- Naval Destroyer secured a Gold medal for achieving the fastest time in the 500m race, a Bronze medal in Category A 200m, and the second-fastest time overall in the 200m event during the festival.
- Water Defenders earned a Bronze Medal in Category B for the 200m race.
Additionally, as we observe October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we wish to honor Chief Petty Officer Deanne Parker-Davis, a Breast Cancer survivor who participated with the Breast Cancer Survivors Team.
These achievements serve as a testament to the dedication, commitment, and excellence exhibited by our teams. Under the leadership of Commander Defence Force, Commodore Raymond E. King, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force exemplifies its commitment to be a responsible corporate citizenship through a range of extensive outreach initiatives and projects. These endeavors aim to strengthen community relations, positively impact individuals, and contribute to the development of thriving communities. The RBDF remains dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in guarding our heritage. We are committed to upholding the highest standards as we protect and preserve the rich legacy that defines our nation.
